Hypnosis for Anxiety: Does it Work?

In my experience as a psychologist I have used what some would call light hypnosis for anxiety.  However, many people are spooked by the mention of the word “hypnosis.”  What it really means is that someone speaks to you in a calming voice in a setting conducive to relaxation.  Think of all the different stages of mind that you experience in a typical day.  The alarm goes off in the morning.  It finds you in a different state than when you are at your creative best during your work day.  People drink wine to create a relaxed state of mind.  However, a relaxed state of mind can be achieved through light hypnosis for anxiety relief.  This can take the form of listening to a guided relaxation CD, certain types of music, or going to surroundings that have strong associations for you regarding being in a relaxed state.

Choose Your Steps Wisely

Making life changes requires effort. It's as if we all have a stack of "effort chips" that we can spend on a problem.

People who say they have "tried everything" to change usually mean that they have spent all their effort chips on the problem.

The key is to spend your effort chips strategically. When you find leverage, the problem gets fixed before your effort chips run out.

The 12 skills are about spending your "effort chips" wisely.
