Depression Self Help: Avoid This Trap if You Take the Road of Depression Self Help

Depression self help is often realistic if the depression is not severe enough to be a clinical depression.  Depression self help can also work well for some people, in certain situations, if it is a mild, clinical depression, they have lots of support, and the self help materials are of high quality.

However, there is a big obstacle that people face with depression whether they choose depression treatment or depression self help.  This obstacle is a dilemma that can become a trap if you’re not careful.  Clinical depression usually lowers, mutes, and depresses a person’s motivation.  One of the common symptoms of depression is experiencing difficulty getting started to do any activity.  Another symptom of depression is loss of pleasure.  So here is the dilemma:  just at the time when depression self help is most urgent for a person to make big changes in their activities, their perspective, and their social interactions they have little or no motivation to even begin!  One of the purposes of this website is to discuss solutions to this and other obstacles.

Choose Your Steps Wisely

Making life changes requires effort. It's as if we all have a stack of "effort chips" that we can spend on a problem.

People who say they have "tried everything" to change usually mean that they have spent all their effort chips on the problem.

The key is to spend your effort chips strategically. When you find leverage, the problem gets fixed before your effort chips run out.

The 12 skills are about spending your "effort chips" wisely.
